This 6th ward brass band sings of the real world they see every day. The 6 members of the group leave no doubt, that they live, breathe and exists in a unforgiving New Orleans, one that will take your life if you slip up and give in. In New Orleans, on any given Sunday, the social groups conduct street parades called second lines. These second lines are conducted all over New Orleans with many Brass Bands that contract with them to provide the rhythms and blues tunes Locals call this the real Mardi Gras.

Led by Corey Henry on Trombone, this hit song was written by Glenn Andrews, who also was born in New Orleans in 1964. It speaks of the sixth ward and it's environment. "Wipe your weary eyes, mama don't cry"...they say. "Drugs and Prostitution, People will Die, .... They say there's no cure for aids, that's a Lie! ", he sings in a gruffy voice, "They got rocks, they got coke and they got dope,.....They got weed, they got speed, and they got seeds, they got fifths, they got straights, and they got coke, you want duck, you want spook or you want stupid.....," singing of the drug scene.

What surprised us when we looked all this up, was how wide and far the song has spread since it's first play on the album , "Buck like a horse." This cut, not only introduced a new type of Brass music to the world, but to the local New Orleans community as well. Little did they know that they and this one song would bring a "whole new" appreciation for the New Orleans culture of what was possible as a brass band.

However, there is a sad part to this story. The Rascals have failed to continue this smooth sound with follow up tunes in the same style as this tune was penned.

That doesn't keep people that like the tune from buying it, ( I recommend you add this one to your collection ) or requesting it almost every Saturday night on the area's local station that plays the program dedicated to the Brass Band sound. "Brass Band Jam" on WWOZ radio receives a large request stream for the tune.

Of course, during the season, in the African American side the Brass Bands will play their musical version of this, but until you hear the words and the rascals play, you're missing the full version of a now classic.
