The Krewe of Choctaw, Visits "Horror Movies"

New Orleans , LA .............January 13, 2007   One of the oldest Krewes on the Carnival schedule for 2007, is the Krewe of Choctaw, which has continued to present unique parades, because of the organizations roots, diversity, and it’s ability to come up with original themes.

Choctaw was founded in 1935 and consists of prominent businessmen and women from the New Orleans metropolitan area.  One of the best things about Carnival,  is the ability of any krewe to deviate from the status quo and strive to be different and unique. This simple fact keeps you guessing, instead of snoring when it comes to the many balls held each season in the city.

This year we were honored to be invited to the krewe's annual ball which is named the "Big Pow-Wow,".  In addition Choctaw calls its King, Queen, Pages and Ladies-in-waiting; the Chief, Princess, Papooses and Indian maidens.  By Digest count, some 83 balls, which include a good deal of African American, Latino, 3 Asian and of course the 60 plus that will be listed in the Mardi Gras Guide.

Digest is thankful to those krewes that have given us the opportunity to attend their balls, parades and special events, which are held each year by their carnival family and membership. We take pride in observing, participating and reporting to the world your magnificent work that is done by your organizations to present a parade or ball for members, visitors, friends and family.

There are those balls, however, that no matter the attitude, the punishment one must endure, the crazy zany people who will rake you over the coals, no matter what, you must attend! The Big Pow Wow is one of those balls.  This ball is so different and unique, a true Mardi Gras aficionado, must attend at least 3 times to take it all in.

The Pow Wow is a joy to watch, from the entrance of the maids, to the entry of the Chief and the Princess.  One of the most unusual aspects is the combination of tradition and entertainment.  The entry of the Medicine Man (Mr. Jessie Krummel) brings excitement and enthusiasm from the audience.  He dances, chants and blesses the ceremony and the participants in tribal fashion, which is truly enlightening.

The Pow Wow was held at Mardi Gras World.  The decorations included the huge float designs of the museum in a stadium style seating arrangement.  The Indian Maidens adorned powder blue gowns and the Maids styled large colorful headdresses depicting special themes.

The Chief, His Magesty Ernie Elfer, Jr. and his Princess, Her Royal and Gracious Majesty Bridget Vincent Holt, entered the room in gracious style and dignity with all the pomp and style of an Indian Chief and his Princess acknowledging the audience with their blessing, by waving their crystal tomahawk styled scepters over the crowd.  Their costumes and headdress colors were tan and adorned with beautiful feathers and shining gems.  The tomahawks were beautifully designed with gold and gemstones.

As the evening was coming to an end, Chief Choctaw, his Warriors and his court did their final ceremony walk to bring this 2007 Pow Wow to close, we at Mardi Gras Digest would like to thank the Captain for his invite, and would recommend anyone that this ball is one you should see at least once.  It was fun, exciting, entertaining and unique.  This ball is like so many others, food and beverage is not part of the ticket price.  This Ball is for entertainment purposes only.  Eat before you attend.
