TV Food Guru consents to Grand Marshal Post for Jefferson Parish Krewe
Mardi Gras in New Orleans is one of the greatest celebrations in the world that is an annual pilgrimage for many groups of friends. However, it is Jefferson parish, its next door neighbor that can and frequently does upstage it big brother to the east. Mardi Gras on February 16, 2010, this season will see the continued parade of big name celebrities for the krewe of Argus, Jefferson Parish's answer to the krewe of Rex in New Orleans. This season the krewe has announced that the TV Food guru, Rachel Ray, has consented to serve as the Krewe's grand marshal and lead the organization down Veteran's Blvd and into the history books as the krewe with the most celebs in it's history in Jefferson Parish. Born Rachael Domenica Ray on August 25, 1968, in Glen Falls, New York Ms Ray is a well known amateur chef and author. She has won many awards including on last June 2009, when according to Forbes magazine, she was named the 79th most powerful celebrity in the world, then last on August, her TV show, "The Rachel Ray Show" received a second Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment. Although Ms Ray, teaches simple recipes on her TV show that she claims can be prepared in 30 minutes or less, there are many critics that claim her 30-minute concept does not account for preparation times and meals cannot be completed in half an hour. The best time one reviewer managed to prep a meal was 49 minutes. The basis of her programs are to "save you time and calories". The tale takes an even more wacky turn when she reports that she uses ingredients such as fresh herbs, garlic and chicken stock to boost flavors. She believes that measuring "takes away from the creative, hands-on process of cooking" and instead favors approximations such as "half a palmful". To critics of her shortcut techniques, there is the standard claim of no formal training, to which Ray responds, "I have no formal anything. I'm completely unqualified for any job I've ever had." She acknowledges that she cannot bake because it does require measuring the ingredients, which again boosts her critics claims. To add to that soup, she claims she cannot make coffee, and that she burns bread under the broiler. On her television programs, she has such catch phrases as "EVOO" (extra-virgin olive oil) and "yum-o", "G.B." (for garbage bowl), and the personal favorite, "Oh my gravy!", "entréetizer" (entrée-sized appetizer), and "stoup" (cross between a soup and stew). To her credit some of the terms have stuck to the American Lexicon, as in 2007, The Oxford American College Dictionary announced the addition of the term EVOO, which Ray has helped to popularize, and credited her with coining the phrase. Also to her credit , on November 12, 2006, Ray and Mario Batali defeated the team of Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis on an episode of Iron Chef America during which cranberries were the secret ingredient. On March 18, 2007, Food Network debuted a Rachael Ray episode of its special Chefography series, on which she stated that "the worst day of (her) life" was Iron Chef America, admitting to being anxious about it weeks before. Ms Ray is a looker however, even being featured in the British men's magazine, entitled, For Him Magazine or FHM for short. A writer for The New York Times wrote, "The shots feature Ray in short-shorts with an exposed midriff, licking chocolate off a big wooden spoon, eating a strawberry and sitting in a sink, laughing as suds cascade down her thighs." If you happen to catch an up close glimpse of her though try hard not to stare, or drool. As beautiful as Ms Ray is, she is married, no children, but she has a large heart according to her admirers, which explains the care she puts forward on childrens behalf. Ray's nonprofit, "Yum-O organization", launched in 2006, aims to help children and families develop a healthy relationship with food. The organization introduces children and families to the kitchen, helps combat childhood hunger in the U.S., and raises money for food-based educational programs and scholarships. We here at Mardi Gras Digest wish Ms. Ray a very pleasant ride and a safe stay in Louisiana.
