Position: Content Specialists - Entry Level    (Part time )    Position Responsibilities:

Assists in the development and implementation of content on websites. May be involved with integrating work of writers and designers to produce a final layout compatible with corporate standards. Requires a Associate's degree with 0-2 years of experience. Expected to have knowledge of HTML, DHTML and JavaScript programming language. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Our reporters take notes and also take photographs or shoot videos. At the office, they organize the material, determine the focus or emphasis, write their stories, and edit accompanying video material. Our content specialists are required to enter information or write stories using laptop or desktop computers and electronically submit the material to the remote server on a weekly basis. 

At Mardi Gras Digest our General-assignment reporters write about newsworthy occurrences in the field of Carnival across the Gulf Coast. Most of these things are parades, balls, the visits of celebrities to ride or appear in, or during the celebration, or business openings, closings, and other duties—as assigned. Reports to the Site Editor for assignments, or simply gather news about the industry of Mardi Gras or other specific topics, that pertain to Mardi Gras in some way. Such things as crime or education, reports specialize in fields such as  theater, social events, science, business. Investigative reporters cover stories that may take many days or weeks of information gathering. May lead or even assign up to four teams of reporters, on our small publication to cover all aspects of the news,  instead of the editor, to free him/herself for research one specific topic. Allows other reporters to cover a greater variety of stories. Our News teams may include reporters, copywriters, graphic artists, and photographers working together to complete a story. On the publication, Mardi Gras Digest magazine", they take photographs, write headlines, lay out pages, edit stories, follow up on wire-service reports. May even solicit advertisements, sell subscriptions, and perform general office work.

Reports to: Website Editor

Education & Training: Associate Degree in English, journalism, and some social studies provide a good foundation for work. College of liberal arts preferred,  which included English with an emphasis on writing, sociology, political science, economics, history, and psychology. Minors in computer science, business, and speech are useful as well. Fluency in the French language necessary in some job assignments in the Acadia regions of the state.

Reporters typically need more than good word-processing skills. Computer graphics and desktop-publishing skills also required. Computer-assisted reporting involves the use of computers to analyze data in search of a story. Knowledge of news photography is invaluable for the high-level positions, which sometimes combine the responsibilities of a reporter with those of a camera operator or photographer.

Requirements:  4-6 yrs experience in journalism. Extensive Knowledge of Mardi Gras, its celebration, and a good overall aspect of all of the cultures. Must be a self starter. Maintain cool and professional attitude even under pressure filled, deadline driven environment. Must be able to produce results in a competitive environment. Able to pass background check. Formal training in journalism may be substituted for up to 2 yrs experience.

Position Compensation : $250/wk  & up DOE
