Covering the Business & Fun of Mardi Gras

Position: Reporter: Temp / Intern

Position Responsibilities:

Primarily a field training position. Responsible for aiding in the covering of events, researching documents, observations of events at scenes, and light interviews of people. Required to investigate and keep track of all krewes, and other Carnival organizations across the gulf coast. Interns or Temps relieve and learn from the reporter I positions and above. They help take notes and also learn to take photographs or shoot video. At the office, they may assist in the organization of the material, or the writing of a story. Temp or intern reporters may be required to enter information on stories using desktop computers or laptop and electronically submit the material to the office from remote locations.

At Mardi Gras Digest our Temporary or intern reporter may write about newsworthy occurrences in the field of Carnival across the Gulf Coast then submit the story to a reporter I or above. Most of these things are parades, balls, the visits of celebrities to ride or appear in, or during the celebration, or business openings, closings, and other duties—as assigned. Reports to the Lead Reporter for assignments. Some also may even solicit advertisements, sell subscriptions, and perform general office work.

If hired, our company policy is to promote from within, before advertising to the general public for positions!

Reports to: Lead Reporter

Education & Training: High school courses in English, journalism, and social studies provide a good foundation for college programs. Useful college liberal arts courses include English with an emphasis on writing, sociology, political science, economics, history, and psychology. Reporters typically need more than good word-processing skills. Computer graphics and desktop-publishing skills also are useful but not required. Some knowledge of action photography is valuable for entry-level positions, which sometimes combine the responsibilities of a reporter with those of a camera operator or photographer.
