Second Line Organizations & Clubs

Profiles: Zulu Social & Pleasure Club

Started by the Tramps Social Aid Club in 1909, they reorganized themselves as a SA&PC, in 1916. Calling themselves the Zulu's after a fierce warrior tribe in Africa, these men constitute the most well known and Grand daddy of all the second line clubs of  New Orleans.

The club is known for it's antics on Mardi Gras day as well as it's famous parades, and has spawned more offspring across the country than it even knows. This club brought second line to it's present cult status, pioneering several of the common icons associated with second lines today, including the sash, and grand marshal to lead the line and/or parade.

The club elects a King from the membership, which in turn selects a Queen from the club's supporters and lady admirers.  The club has a new website in the works, but until it is up we'll try to keep up with the club's activities through out the year.
