Louisiana
has the most Carnival Organizations in the Country!
The state
of Louisiana is the only state in the U.S. that holds the celebration
of the Carnival season in such
high regard, that in 1875 the Mardi Gras Bill was signed into
law making the day of Fat Tuesday a Legal Holiday.
It is still
the only state in the union, that claims this distinction.
As such the state
has over 550 Carnival organizations that has the celebration of
Carnival as their sole purpose for existing. Over 1,380 Carnival
Organizations that are, "ball only", for the club
members to enjoy. Over 30 known "walking clubs", that
are relatively small groups that have processionals, scheduled or
otherwise somewhere in the state.
In the area,
surrounding Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas, where prior to
1940, there were no more than 35 parades total, there are now a
whopping 389 parades and growing!
This state is so
filled with the history, origins, and number of krewes that it
will take over three years to seek out, count, and verify the
clubs before we can even come close to declaring a "good
database". It is a daunting task ahead of us!
