Phorty Phunny Phellows
The Krewe of Phorty Phunny Phellows was revived and first paraded with the Krewe of Clones in 1981. Now they have a
Twelfth Night streetcar ride that heralds the arrival of the Carnival season. The Krewe consist of men and women but is not like any other Krewe in Carnival.
They hold their Krewe party each night after the traditional ride on the streetcar line. Celebrating their 22nd year this season of 2003,
this group of costumed and masked riders will board the streetcar at 6:30 p.m. and leave the Street Car barn located on Willow street in Carrollton at 7 p.m.
"This is our way of publicly announcing that the Carnival season has begun," says the Captain of the historic organization that dates back to the 1870's .
During the ride, members, will choose a slice of kingcake. Whoever receives the "baby" will be declared King and Queen for the season. The King is called "Boss," of the
historic krewe.
Playing music on the streetcar each season are the Storyville Stompers. The decorated streetcar, which is traditionally is still decked out in it's yuletide dressings, will pull from the
station and run uptown to lee Circle then return to the Barn. You can spot this car because it usually has a sign reading, "It's Carnival Time!" on it's side, with a really noisy party going on inside it.
Immediately after the ride the party will be held at the new Rock n' Bowl annex called Bowl Me Under. It's located on the corner of Tulane and South Carrollton Avenues.
