Texas
Mardi Gras
The state
of Texas was a interesting entry into the Carnival industry, with
just barely 130 years of activity under its belt buckle.
The History of the Texas Carnival reads like a detective
story of sorts, as the holiday enjoyed an on again,
....Off again notoriety as residents who couldn't come to
New Orleans hosted their own fetes in an effort to
celebrate.
Most of the
celebrations took on a decidedly ,"Texas style",
to them, taking on the shape of rodeos, and games, instead
of the balls, that are common today!
It wasn't
until the Galveston first recorded Mardi Gras celebration,
in 1867, which included a masked ball at Turner Hall
(Sealy at 21st St.) and a theatrical performance from
Shakespeare's "King Henry IV" featuring Alvan
Reed (a justice of the peace weighing in at 350 pounds!)
as Falstaff, did Carnival find a permanent home in the
Lone Star state..
