CARROLLTON

Originally incorporated in 1845 as a city in its own right, Carrollton was annexed by New Orleans in 1874.

CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT

Center of commerce in the Crescent City, the CBD is defined by its main artery, Poydras Street, which stretches from the Superdome to the World Trade Center and is dotted with skyscrapers.

One of the city's oldest churches is here: St. Patrick's, built in 1840. Lafayette Square provides an oasis of green and is a monument to Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette.

FRENCH QUARTER

Affectionately termed the "Vieux Carre" (French for old square), this area was the site of the original city, founded in 1718 as a military outpost. Today, the 120-square-block neighborhood is on the National Register, and its quaint, narrow streets and shuttered Creole townhouses continue to charm. The spiritual center of the Quarter is Jackson Square, initially the place d' armes of the French-and, later, Spanish-government. Jackson Square contains the city's most photographed building, St. Louis Cathedral, itself flanked by the Cabildo and Presbytere .. former seats of power that are now historical museums. Some of the world's finest antique emporiums can be found on Royal Street, while adjacent Bourbon is known for its raucous nightlife.

GARDEN DISTRICT

Perhaps the grandest of New Orleans' neighborhoods, this area is defined by stunning Italianate villas, Queen Anne-style mansions and West Indies-inspired raised cottages. Originally carved from the Livaudais Plantation in 1825, the Garden District was first settled by wealthy Americans who built stately homes surrounded by expansive lawns and gardens. One of the city's historic above ground cemeteries, Lafayette, is at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Prytania Street.
